Intermediate + Advanced Player Reviews

Jon - 25+ Years Performing and Recording Mbira

“I found it delivered on a lot of levels. It was cleverly thought out - so things meshed together towards the end of the week in a ‘Ta Da’ kind of way.

You kept things accessible and on point, which helps a great deal given the complexity of the music. Your system of theory and underlying structures offered us solid foundations and a practice routine that strengthens the root to more confidence, risk taking and improvisation as a player - all outcomes I experienced as a result of taking part.

There was a great balance between workshop - where focus was needed, and down time… taking in the glorious views of the Stroud countryside and conversations about mbira music, and people’s journeys as players.

I think our mix of backgrounds, ages and playing abilities made the experience much richer. I loved that we were all getting familiar with a new tuning, and the playing in the evenings in dezes was a real joy, meshing together new parts and ‘hocketing’ the high notes between mbiras.

What a bonus that all the food, culinary treats and beverages were absolutely delicious, made for a cracking week of fun and learning.”

Djulz - African Percussion Teacher and Performer

“I have been a student of Mbira music for several years, with a particular interest and resonance with the instrument's ceremonial origins in the context of Shona culture.

As a long-term subscriber to mbira.online, I have found that Andy's unique methodology has provided an excellent bridge between the Western mind and this ancient and beautiful music. The value of his teaching was amplified during the camp, wherein he demonstrated great dexterity as a teacher to offer his insightful system of learning to people at all stages on their journey with Mbira.

His warmth and hospitality also extended the invitation to others to be themselves and let this shine through their instrument.

I recommend future camps to those open to new perspectives on traditional music, and look forward to being a part of the event's evolution.

Many thanks to Andy and the spirit of Mbira Magic living within him.”
